The Ensembles
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School has a big group of talented and dedicated students. When combined, they make up the Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and may other small ensembles. The Marching Band is the most sought after ensemble in our district. They perform at football games, parades, competition, and many other events. When a smaller ensemble is requested, the Jazz Band usually fits best. This 15 piece ensemble is more versitile inrepertoire, playing both more popular tunes, and many jazz standards. All of the ensembles are vital to the culture of the department. Stop in and see what we're doing!
JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Want to hear smooth and sultry music? Want an ensemble for your birthday party or wedding reception? Smooth Jazz or R & B fit your needs. Well, the students in the jazz band look to do just that. On a smaller scale, they are learning to exhibit some virtuosity and some ability to balance and blend to make you feel their souls in sound.
Mostly instrumental and sometimes vocal music gives you the sound that may not blow your ears away but just may blow your mind. These traditional ensembles include Alto, Tenor (perhaps Baritone & Soprano Saxophone much like Najee, Brandford Marseillais, Kenny G, Gerald Albright, and giants like Charlie Bird Parker and John Coltrane). Trumpets, Trombones, Guitars, Bass, Piano & Drums (but there is room for flute, violin, xylophone, and more).
We sometimes combine this ensemble with a few marching band pieces like the drumline to create our PEP Band (like basketball season)
The smaller group is great for elegant affairs.
